World ChampionshipsThe 21st World Championships in Brasilia, Brazil gets underway this weekend. http://eventos.cbvl.esp.br/pt/21-fai-mundial-de-asa-delta-brasilia-2017 The competition program:
We wish everyone a safe and successful championships. Let the games begin! |
Young gunsWe are super proud to have a gaggle of young Moyes pilots competing at their first World Championships. We wish them all the best! Name: Ollie Chitty Coming into the 21st FAI World hang gliding Championships as the top ranked UK pilot, Ollie Chitty has high hopes for Brasilia. The talented 27yr old has been raised around aviation thanks to his dad Nick, who first took him flying at the tender age of 2. Since then Ollie has not looked back, his life revolves around aviation – working as an aircraft engineer to fund his habit and flying any aircraft he can get his hands on in his spare time, from paramotors to microlights and anything in between. However it wasn’t until 6 years ago that Ollie became a hang glider pilot, and only the last four years of that have been competitive, this year he has really ramped up his game. Taking out 3rd place at the recent Midwest champs and 4th at the Dinosaur Open, in the USA . Ollie has put in the work and preparation to give himself the best shot at his first world championships. In Brasilia he will be supported by his proud-as-punch dad and the entertaining duo will keep us all up to date on events via their daily youtube Vlogs. https://m.youtube.com/channel/UCZqi5rVxVWL2C50WQ5AFWbw Name: Nikki Longshore Having moved from the water-sports loving paradise of Hawaii to the flatlands of Texas, Niki Longshore needed a new hobby, so she decided to give hang gliding a shot. That was four years ago now, and while initially a bit apprehensive she hasn’t looked back. Niki arrives in Brasilia for the Hang Gliding World Championships fresh from an inspiring Australian season , only heading home to the US for a few months of rest, relaxation and more flying! The original Gecko Girl, Niki has developed a love for distance flying after taking out the Gecko challenge with a flight of 212km and has her sights set firmly on distance records and that elusive 300 mile flight. Having only just graduated to the high performance Moyes Rx Pro at the 2017 Forbes Flatlands, Niki is on a steep learning curve and is hungry to gain experience and start producing results. Brasilia will provide a great opportunity for Niki to experience hang gliding competition at the highest level, it may be her first world champs, but we’re sure it won’t be her last. Name: Harrison Rowntree The youngest member of Team Australia, Harrison Rowntree makes up for his lack of experience with boundless enthusiasm. He’s only been flying for four years, but he’s hit the competition scene with gusto and landed himself on the Aussie team with a national ranking of 7th, booking his spot in the World Championships & his first ever international competition. While it’s surprising to those around him, there is more to Harrison than Hang Gliding – He is currently studying Teaching and majoring in Physics at the University of Adelaide, enjoys playing guitar, is often found tinkering with computers and earns his keep on the family olive farm in Coonalpyn, South Australia. But don’t let that fool you, he has roped his mother into towing him up in the back paddock so he can sneak in just a few extra flights, you cant keep this one on the ground for long. Cheering him on from home will be his girlfriend Tamsin, his pet duck Durkey and the whole team/family at Longridge Olives. Name: Rory Duncan The third generation of the Duncan Hanggliding Dynasty is ready to hit the world stage. Rory Duncan is a hang gliding pilot with heritage. Growing up in Newcastle on NSW’s central coast, Rory has been surrounded by aviation since birth. His family own and run Airborne windsports, specialising in weightshift microlights and gyrocopters where Rory “works” as a test pilot and flight instructor. At the tender age of 24, Rory is looking to follow in his uncle Rick’s footsteps and take the top step of the podium. Although he is young, Rory is no novice, having learnt to fly at age 16, he’s spent a few years on the Australian competition circuit and spent last year touring with the Rhythm of Flight crew throughout the US and South America including the Brasilia pre-worlds. When you can get Rory down from the skies, you’ll find him chasing adventure, wether it be wakeboarding, kitesurfing or carving the slopes on a snowboard. Rooster has a new trick up his sleeve having recently switched to a Moyes RX Pro, we can’t wait to see what he does with it at his first world championships. Keep an eye on these guys you can follow them here... You can follow the Australian Hang Gliding Team at https://www.facebook.com/aussiehg/ |

Hang Gliding in China is making a stir with lots of young people interested in the sport. Longfei Yang our Moyes dealer is doing a wonderful job promoting hang gliding, spreading the word and growing the sport. An International competition at Longfei’s flight park next June might be on the cards! |
Documentary filming in CaliforniaRicardo Joppert from Brazil was recently in California filming for a documentary on the history of hang gliding. They were able to complete five episodes (26min each) in California and are still doing six more here in Brazil including the World Championship and the Northeast Rally in November.
